Help Dom Help Kids

hey peeps, sponsors, and parents,

I often volunteer at C.A.R.D. Headstart in Broken Arrow, OK located at Southside Elementary and recently I read my children's book The Restless Little Bunny and the Missing Sun to the children in Southside 6 (a 3 year old classroom). It was a hit and many of the children wanted to take the book home. Word has spread to the other classrooms and now I am getting requests from all the 3 year old classrooms and 4 year old classrooms of Southside Elementary! This inspired my quest to make the book available for all of the children and teachers of Southside Elementary and many others in the Tulsa area. My goal is 500 books for 500 kids and teachers. I believe this is very achievable with financial assistance from sponsors right here in Oklahoma. Early reading is vital to a successful future. If you or anyone you know could assist us in achieving this goal, please let me know.

stuff the bus

FOX23 and My41 are teaming up with Reasor’s for Stuff the Bus 2010.

Stuff the Bus is is a way for you to help out students in need in the coming school year by donating new school supplies to any of the 15 school districts serviced by Reasor’s.

All you have to do to help is download a school supply list for one of the schools on the Stuff The Bus page. Then go to your local Reasor’s, buy the supplies, and drop them off right there in the store. Ends August 6th.

remember black wallstreet

i remember it like it was yesterday...10 years ago, i was a sophomore in high school teaching my u.s. history class (including teacher who was easily twice my age) about an overlooked, often forgotten and hushed turning point of my city's history: the tulsa race riot of 1921. until recently, it was left out of a lot of history books. many thought i was crazy as i related the stories told to me by some of the survivors. they say oral history is biased, but realistically, written history is full of politics (ie: in 1919, president woodrow wilson received the nobel piece prize for his peace efforts abroad, but shortly after he leaves office, north tulsa gets burned to the ground. ironic?)

may 30-june 1, 1921- the basics of the tulsa race riot
setting and premise:may 1921. widespread economic depression across the entire u.s. oklahoma 14 years past declaration of statehood. harding is president. promising return to normalcy. works to outlaw lynching. kkk at highest numbers. tulsa, ok had it's own "mason-dixon line" and is divided by one street running east-west (admiral). blacks and black owned businesses, schools, etc to the north. whites and white owned businesses, schools etc to the south. the prominent black side of town was called greenwood. it was know for it's upbeat nightlife where many musicians passed through to perform, it's self-sufficency (grown here, bought here), and rapid flourishment. unlike their white neighbors to the south, the area proved to be thriving and recession-proof earning the nickname "black wallstreet". before there was chicago, dallas, atlanta, and los angeles (as they are now); there was tulsa-the pride of the great southwest.
"cause": a black man trips while entering an elevator (operated by a white woman) of a building he worked in and breaks his fall by hanging on the elevator operator. she screams. he is subsequently arrested for assault (elevated to sexual assault). rumor gets out that he was to be hung for his crime. a crowd of black men, take up arms and march to the courthouse. a white man, at the courthouse grabs the gun of one of the black men there. a struggle ensues, the white man lay dead, and the riot begins. the greenwood area, also known as black wallstreet, is burned down to the ground by angry white rioters. planes were used to "burn little africa" to the ground. after the riot was over, the elevator operator dropped the charges due to a "misunderstanding".
aftermath: official death toll was set at 39 (26 black and 13 white). despite the coverup, there has been sufficent evidence brought forth to prove that a mass burial exists across the street from where the old drillers baseball stadium once stoodb where many were rounded up for "safety" then mowed down with machine guns and dragged out, dumped into a landfill-like grave where a shopping center now sits. additionaly, there was a park that called for expansion in 2002. when excavation began, another mass burial was found.
many mayors, governors, congressmen, politicians etc. have aplogized for the incident yet have failed to agree on an appropriate form of repirations. to date, the greenwood area has yet to recover and is now considered the ghetto.

food for thought. remember my city as it was this holiday.

success!

the results are in. the fundraiser for carver middle school's athletic department was a success. i would personally like to thank everyone in the community that supported the cause. many thanks to Nancy Christy and Deana Holt for putting this together.



it was crazy stepping foot in the new gym and it was nothing like it had been before. everything was switched around. the once outdoor classroom, is nothing more than a parking lot. the former gym, now classrooms and tech rooms. i hadn't been in the building since 1999! damn...talk about old school.
shout out to my carver c/o '99 fam. a lot of babies out there. kyra is still goofy. ricky is still ricky. mark is now a fitness instructor. j.c. is doing his music thing. and of course the feature of the night, nfl superbowl champ from the new orleans saints, robert meachem.

okay...now to the game.
it was a close game. we played 7 minute quarters and halftime wasn't nearly as long enuff for those of us who hadn't picked up a basketball since...2000 (give or take a year or two). the alum was the home team (coached by coach buck). i didn't plan on playing but with a little convincing from the teachers, i decided to come off the bench (praying nobody got tired). so, second quarter. i'm in like flynn and i would love to say i hit about seven 3's and had 10 assists, 9 steals, and 14 rebounds. but that would be lying haha. 5 mins into the 2nd quarter i'm huffing and puffing like i played 10 games with no rest! gee...but after sitting out the 3rd quarter and getting my gatorade on, i caught my second wind. then i started to contribute. diving for loose balls, blocking shots (okay just one) and snatching rebounds (4). i managed one steal becoz we hadn't any jerseys and the guy passed the ball directly to me and meachem tripped over my back while i was gathering the ball. it felt good to get back in the zone of basketball but trust me, i dont need to do that again for another 11 years hahaha. oh by the way, the game went into double overtime with the coaches team coming out on top 71-68 handing the class of '99 its very first defeat in basketball. but when you think about it, if we were still in our prime...haha nevermind. if you're 21 and younger, stay as young as you can. don't wish you were older..it's nothing attractive about it. lol
