dom's 2010 playlist

let's get into it. this is my top 8 artists of 2010 that have been on the blog.

#8 - singa bromfield
"latenight jam session" has that feel-good vibe that makes it enjoyable. only true musicians can bring instruments to life like that.
singa on the blog

#7 - hana pestle
hana's album is a must listen. "need" is melodic, heartfelt, and very passionate. gotta love someone that can bring you a hit like that.
hana on the blog

this is where it got hard so i just made a 6 way tie for #1. i play each of these artists every day and for different reasons but the common thread that ties these artist together is pure greatness. besides it's my blog...i do what i want!

#1 - six way tie (no particular order)
money militia
"u girl" is self-explanatory. like money said, he told a girl what he wanted and she fell for it. check out his vids coz he got some fire that ain't even been released yet.
money on the blog

j.a.y.
j.a.y.'s single "magazine girl" ft ize open is a metaphoric masterpiece that makes the ladies feel special. anytime you have a "rapper turnt singa" there is no room for error. i'm sure t-pain would be proud.
j.a.y. on the blog

mary rose
speaking of t-pain, this artist created a buzz that took the blog in a whole new direction when she did an acoustic cover of one of pain's hip-hop artists. that led to recording her single "what this means" in t-pain's studio, a song in which she looks back at a relationship for what it was. 2011 is shaping up huge for mary.
mary rose on the blog

r.e.a.l.
when it comes to huge, these cats know how to "do it big".
"big body whip, call that bitch precious"...um, j.a.y. said it, not me. i'm just quoting. haha...anyway, this song was definitely in my head for days after i heard it so i play it all the time now. i can't resist it. what up r.e.a.l.!?!
r.e.a.l. on the blog

b. payne
the lightswitch mixtape is sick if ya'll ain't heard it. all he did the whole time was beat the tracks up one at a time with the punchlines. his street team (#TeamPayne) proved their presence on the blog by making him #1 on the blog for a week straight. what do you think about it, b. payne?
"i found success and i like it, this time it's really on, lightswitch..." b. payne
b. payne on the blog

blais
last but certainly not least, we have the current #1, blais! with tracks like "make my heart go boom", "come", and his remix to nicki minaj's "right thru me", it's gonna be hard to keep him from rising to the top in 2011. stay tuned to the blogspot bcoz we will be doing a follow up with blais.
blais on the blog

this was 2010. let's see what 2011 brings us. i'm sure most of these artist will be on the next list as well. til then, this is the wrap up. if you know somebody that deserves to be on this list, hit me up at bookdomunique@gmail.com. we shall continue six degrees of separation next year. keep it hot coz i'm listening...

multi-purpose jewelry

what do we have here? guys would say it's a necklace. most women would call it an accessory. but some women use it as a weapon of seduction and a tool to wrap around a guy's neck as she humps him to death on the dance-floor...i'm jus sayn.
either way, it's a good look.

ashleigh jerkatis

-new lenox, il

hey peeps. check out this artist on the rise. here's her bio from her reverbnation page:

"In the summer of 2009, Fourteen year old Ashleigh Jerkatis had the amazing opportunity to work with Grammy Award Winning Producer Barry Goldstein from New York City to bring to life just a few of her many self written songs. Ashleigh believes in following her dreams. Since she was only 5 years old, that dream was to be a professional singer and to let the world hear her voice! When Ashleigh was 9 years old, she began singing in many Chicago area restaurants. Ashleigh began writing songs at the age of 10, that were years beyond her experiences. Many times she would wake up with a song coming to her and she would get out of bed grab the guitar and begin writing. She has self written nearly 100 songs to date. At the age of 13, she began opening for various bands including a 45 minute acoustic performance at The Majestic Theatre in Streator, Illinois. Also in the summer of 2009, Ashleigh traveled to Rochester, New York to co-write the song "Break In Two" with the amazingly talented Richard Fink IV and Johnny Cummings at Castle Nine Entertainment. Since 2009, Ashleigh was a Decatur Finalist in The Colgate Country Showdown, and was the 1st place winner in both New Lenox Idol and Orland Days Singing Competitions in her home state of Illinois! Ashleigh is a member of The Nashville Spotlight Kid's Club and has performed at The Nashville Palace many times. Ashleigh is very excited to keep moving forward with her career!!! She hopes to someday inspire others to follow their dreams!"

hana pestle

-billings, montana

billings, montana...star of the big country sky. hana pestle is primed to be the first big star out of billings by way of georgia (her birthplace). it's rare that i find an artist with a voice that makes me stop what i'm doing to listen to the melodies that are flowing from my speakers. hana is that and then some. according to a friend of mine that caught hana's performance at the whiskey a go-go in california, recordings just don't do her justice.
hana's debut album feature's her single "need" which sounds like a perfect fit for the twilight series; many twilight fans agree. although her fanbase is growing daily, she remains focused on her mission to motivate others.

"I just want to be able to make music and support myself out on the road for as long as possible. I really want to reach out to new people and inspire them to create their own art. Truly, just getting to a point where my music could really support my lifestyle would be amazing. I want to continue to release music for as long as I make it." - Hana (hanapestle.com)

catchy local artists

- tulsa, ok

going back home this holiday, my gift for my city is to put on some of the local cats that don't get the national spotlight that others that i work with do. so i did some listening around and put together a list of artists that have been creating a buzz for different reasons.

from one song i found a handful of artist worthy of some positive buzz.

"fallin in love" eddye k ft yung villin, mellokie, and miss unique
big collabo here with three an up-and-coming female rappers and one of the top male rappers out of the area.

yung villin refuses to stop dropping mixtape after mixtape while reppin his city to the fullest with tracks like "gotta get it" featuring the soulful singer sincere grant. grant is the only r&b singer from the streets that i know that can sing with the likes of anthony hamilton while smoking a black on stage. the boy got talent. (reverbnation.com/yungvillin reverbnation.com/sinceregrant)

as for the female rappers, eddye k is not afraid to challenge a man's sexuality in her single "enough" with a style similar to lauren hill. by the way she has a video shoot at the el rodeo event center (the old "level") on wednesday, december 29th starting at 6pm. (reverbnation.com/eddyek)

mellokie does her own thing with more of a rasheeda flow. her single "top notch" let's you know she doesn't mind being the center of attention. (reverbnation.com/mellokie1way)

some might remember mz unique (no relation lol) from her 106th and park appearance on freestyle friday. i must admit, she has a bigger heart than i would have thought. fame or not, it doesn't mean a thing if it ain't about that green. check her out. i'm digging her track entitled "money freestyle". (reverbnation.com/mzuniquemusic)

other artists you might check out: j-friday, j.u.n.e., yung nasti, and kool-aid.

ya'll keep at it. i'm listening.

i was under the impression he was trying to run out the clock. i know he's done some dumb stuff but this was showing the maturation of a guy who has made some mistakes and i think his team should have waited until the whistle before they stormed the field. no matter what "shoulda, coulda, woulda" happened, the eagles won the game. i'm just sayin...

all about you

jeremih's "all about you" features his hit single "down on me" but if you haven't picked it but by now, you've only experienced the tip of the iceburg. when it comes to love, there are many sictuations that lead to unexplained emotions and untold feelings...jeremih gives the ladies an insiders look to what the mind of a man is really like. aim to please. love then leave. certainly this album will "take off".

"baby we should let this curtain close
there is really nothing else that's left to show
it's like everytime you look we're starting over
baby, we done it too many times before
can't you see i had enough
all my love, maybe you didn't deserve it
acting like you're miss perfect
i'm manning up, standing up
cause i know you ain't been doing me right

you know i thought i had it all y'all
it seems that i'm wasting time
even though i've tried
guess i've done it all wrong

i wish that i
wish that i could help us
but i gotta take off, off, off
for once in my life
i gotta take off, off, off
it's time for me to break away..." (lyrics from "take off")

i definitely feel you on this one my dude.

thank you
for killing me
i'm not the man i used to be
after all this time
finally found out i'm alone
but there will be
no tears for yesteryear
i wear these scars
just to prove that i'm alive
i know it comes as a surprise
but thank you

blais

-dallas, tx

what up peeps! we got another hot artist for you. he goes by the name of blais and he's hitting the music scene so hard that she is bound to start hitting back with a record deal. yeah, by the end of this you won't believe that he's still unsigned. he's currently managed by j.d. wilson management as he works on his album, pressing forward on his quest to be a household name. shout out to jasmine for hooking up this connect with me and blais. somebody let me borrow $5 million...i need to sign him real quick. anyway, before i introduce this beast, lemme make sure he's ready. blais?

“i swear to God that imma fight, like a boxer here tonight
i'mma spit this shit and give this shit, like Obama here tonight
i'mma own this shit and throw this shit, nolan ryan in the 9th
and i promise i'mma bomb it, like osama here tonight!”
(blais)

whoa, whoa, whoa homie. that's enough free entertainment for now. let's chop it up real quick.

Dom: first of all, where does the name Blais come from?
Blais: well my name (which is my actual last name) comes from my french background. my father was black and my mother is italian and french. in america its pronounced (blaze) and in france its pronounced (blay).

Dom: you know there's some girl out there tapping her homegirl saying "i told you he wasn't half indian!" [haha]. okay, you hail from the great state of texas where everybody strives to "do it big". who or what motivates you to do it big?
Blais: i was actually born in NY, raised in VA. i came to texas four years ago where i started my solo career. i’ve been doing music since the age of 4 and of course some of the legends greats have always been an influence. although, my supporters are the ones that really motivate me the most.

Dom: i hear ya. shout out to the fans that hold us up! a lot of the biggest artists come out of texas. what makes you different?
Blais: well i'm not trying to follow the "in crowd". not saying that's what texas does but i feel a lot of artists all around try to be something they are not. my music really reflects me as a person.

Dom: where do you draw your inspiration?
Blais: my greatest inspiration was and still is michael jackson. besides God, i give praise and owe everything to [mj]. he sparked my love for music and entertainment. i also love artists like buddy holly, prince and john lennon. the greats.

Dom: that's a 80's baby line up [haha] them youngings have no idea! now who in the game do you admire?
Blais: hmm admire? i dont think i admire anyone in this day but i do think kanye is genius along with r. kelly. oh and another up-and-coming artist who is really dope is bei maejor.

Dom: i admire keri hilson. still waiting for her to call me. i read that you write music for the r&b group "3AM". how many different projects do you have your hand in?
Blais: i have quite a few that i am working on. i really love to work with singers. one project i am very proud to be working on is jordan sparks. i'm currently finishing up a song for her.

Dom: nice! that's quite an accomplishment. ya'll look out for that. i listened to your track "come". it's hot and it seems to have a prince flavor to it. how did you come up with the concept?
Blais: thank you. prince was definitely a huge influence with this song. i wanted to make something for the clubs but i also wanted to bring that old feeling back. that feel good, "letting a woman know how much she is wanted without being so blunt while being blunt" music [laughs].

Dom: you know what, we oughtta make that a new genre of music. album coming soon. what can we expect?
Blais: you're going to get ME...a man who cherishes his mother, loves women, and my ambition for music.

Dom: name a few collaborations you've been involved in.
Blais: man! i have a real sick track called "love it/hate it" with snow tha product. i produced the track and laid down the hook, sent it to her and she blessed me with some heat. also my single "make my heart go boom" features my dude steve soulja. he sung an amazing hook and did the second verse also. working on a few others that will have to be a surprise. [winks]

Dom: oh yeah that just sets up another exclusive right here on the blog so peeps stay tune for that. what is your favorite track that you have either performed, produced, or written for either yourself or someone else and why?
Blais: i would have to say my song "something2some1". i feel this is my greatest love song because i broke it down so simple but it meant so much.
"i rather have you cry from the truth, then smile from lie
and i don’t want to think what it could’ve been,
i would love the thought that we tried..."
(lyrics from "something2some1")
like i said, simple but it means so much.

Dom: that's wussup. your youtube account features a verse you recorded on Nicki Minaj's "right thru me". how did that come about?
Blais: just something for me and her supporters. i think they enjoyed that one.

Dom: i know i did. i went home quoting you. you know it's bad when the convo starts off "you keep, you keep tripping like you the victim"...but i digress [haha]. if you had a mic that spoke to the world, what would you say? in other words, what does the world need to know about Blais?
Blais: i breathe music…i bleed music…

b payne tha rapper part 3

-orlando florida

another exclusive!!! checking in with brandon "b payne" payne to get the "new new" about his adventures and learn more about his street team. let's get to it!!!

Dom: aight payne, so word is you have a few projects in the works. what's the first thing you got coming up?

BPayne: well i got my 2nd annual concert at a local orlando club named SCOOP Bar and Grill on Saturday, January 22nd.

Dom: thas wussup. how did that come about?

BPayne: well they say hard work doesn't go unnoticed. i grinded hard last november after the release of my first official mixtape "ThA.CravE" and the right ears heard it. gained some contacts with club owners, mainly my boy Mike Irene, who basically opened to doors. There was such a good turnout at the first show in January 2010 that i decided to do it again, but bigger and better.

Dom: okay okay. i guess the fans gotta see it to believe it. i'm sure #TeamPayne is all over that one right?

BPayne: haha YESSIR. "man i love my team, i would die for these niggas ahhhhhhh" [Drake voice lol). nah, but really, #TeamPayne is now my backbone.

Dom: ‎for those who don't know, what exactly is #TeamPayne?

BPayne: alright #TeamPayne is my basically my ride or die appointed fans that have banded together to stop at nothing to ensure my success. it feels so good to know that i have impacted souls so much that they are dedicated to help the way they are. i appreciate all of them so much. the head of the team (under me) is my #2 fan Lea Thompson. the team was basically her idea and she does what she has to do to help. shoutout to the other members though. that's my dudes Derek and Melvin, and my beautiful ladies Andrea, Ingrid, Stacy, Michelle, Yavi, my sister Tonya, my United Kingdom member Leonie, and the newest recruit Atarah. I love all yall and appreciate the support so much.

Dom: gotta show love to those that show you love. it's been a minute (since october) since the mixtape dropped and we last did a spot for the blog. talk to me about the success of the last mixtape.

BPayne: Yo that shit blew the FUCK up. For most of the members of the team, #LightSwitch was the first thing they heard from me. They grew love for my music cuz my love for it was shown through that mixtape. Its still getting checked out all around. Even in the UK. Definitely a big success.

Dom: from FLA to the UK. what a difference a year makes. what's next for bpayne?

BPayne: global domination [haha] no joke though. i'm coming for everybody iPod, iTunes, ears, hearts and all. me and my team are making it to the top no matter what anybody thinks. january is our month, 2011 is our year. #TeamPayne or stay broke.

Dom: as long as you stay in touch with your favorite writer. i gotta retire one day hahaha i'm just saying.

BPayne: yo you are now encrusted with the B.Payne seal of approval. #TeamPayne fucks with you for good now bredrin.

ya'll my witnesses! i shall retire by next year. b payne the pressure is on! haha regardless, you still have a home on the blog fam!

thing...
remember we had one?
it didn't turn out
coz we each did our own thing.
remember that one thing
we said we shoulda did?
maybe we was talking like kids.
then there's that bigger thing
that probably would have happened
if we pursued our thing;
there was a lot of passion
for it to be nothing.
that would have made our thing
unforgettable.
we still joke like we got a thing,
and say if we ever had a brief moment,
we would do that little thing
even though we got our own things.
aint that something?
but if we don't act, then it's nothing.
in that sense,
we're okay
each going our own way
but i would still like to experience
that little thing with you

just to stay with who?
a slouching nobody.
you said you had my back,
i fell on nobody.
avoiding every mirror
coz i don't feel myself,
everyday is no shave
coz otherwise i'd kill myself.
i ask myself all the time, "is it worth it bro?"
hear my conscience talking to me
through the radio.
hear my mama yelling at me
when she on the phone,
saying "you know better than that"
do i really though?
well now this might be a newsflash,

keeping a promise to you
aint worth my forever,

sucky sex tips

so i'm flipping through this magazine, bored out of my mind and i come across these sex tips that are supposed to put the guy in the mood. the worse tips are coming from people with phd's.

sucky tip #1: "run your feet and toes up and down his legs, dragging your toenails lightly against his skin as you go." (ladies i dare you to put your feet on your man without getting kicked)

sucky tip #2: "wear a long necklace so it tickles his chest when you lean forward during girl-on-top." (let's talk this one out. naked girl-on-top. during sex. do you really think a guy needs to be tickled with a necklace?)

sucky tip #3: "over his boxers, put your open mouth against his penis. breathe out like you're trying to create steam." (wtf?)

sucky tip #4: "have sex with your hair wet, and whip it around to shower him with droplets of water." (why so i can feel like i'm having sex with a wet dog?)

sucky tip #5: "lick his eyelids, and then blow on your saliva." (uh...)

other sucky tips included: biting his nipples (no go), armpit insertion (weird), licking behind his knee (really?), oral from behind (didn't mike epps say something about that?), and foot jobs (pointless).

look...forget all the games coz ain't nothing like the real thing. i'm jus sayin.

nice guy vs the jerk part 2

update***
remember the nice guy scenario i gave in the last blog? well come to find out, there was a reason for the way the chick was treating my friend...there was another guy. but instead of being an adult and coming out and saying "hey, i'm boning someone else so i'm gonna agitate the gravel", she decided to drag it out until she left her phone in the livingroom while she went to bed like a "not smart female dog" (for lack of a better phrase) and the new boyfriend sent a late night text message. hubby found out and in a time like that, she's fortunate that he kept his cool becoz in the heat of the moment, there is a few battered women out there that experienced physically what the guy was feeling emotionally. i didn't say i condone it, but i can understand the rage. i'm just sayin...
*in short, if you're gonna do something like that to someone that doesn't deserve it, you should either prepare yourself for the consequence, or be adult/resepectful/considerate enough to let them know and let them be.

runaway

welcome to class ladies and gents. i see a few people weighing in on kanye's film "runaway" on twitter but none that i've seen have really talked about the depth of metaphorical expression conveyed throughout the whole thing. at face value it seems to be about a failed love-life between a man and a phoenix. but what about everything else in the film? here's my opinion.

part 1:
first we see kanye in his fast car driving in fast flashy car until he reaches the phoenix that crash landed in front of him. he takes her home and shows her around.

my take on part 1:
listening to kanye's past albums, we know that he has expressed that his road to fame has always been lonely. the fast car represents his life in the fast lane as a celebrity. along the way, i couldn't help but notice that he passed up a lot of female deer; a peaceful animal at best that could easily represent "the good girls". then suddenly he meets a phoenix that "sets his world on fire" and he can't help but take her home.

"first rule in this world baby, don't pay attention to anything you see in the news." (runaway)

this line struck me on the level as if he was preparing her for what the media may say about him; the rumors and lies. from there we cut to a scene where kanye is creating the "power" instrumental as the phoenix is seen dancing to the beat of his drum, so to speak. their vibe becomes one and she openly accepts him. the parade to me represents everything that makes kanye tick. he shows the kid side of him, tells of his inspirations (michael jackson), his guardian angels (grandmother and mother) and his past that he knows he can't run away from but openly accepts. the fireworks brings out the kid in him causing him the smile for the first time in the film. all the while, the phoenix is sharing these moments with him.

part 2:
the dinner party.

my take on part 2:
just before the dinner, kanye takes the time to prep the phoenix so she can "fit in" with the crowd; showing her how things are done in his world. at dinner, the phoenix gets a lot of looks. it's apparent she doesn't belong but kanye doesn't seem to care.

"'your girlfriend is really beautiful.'
'thank you.'
'do you know she's a bird?'" (runaway)

more correctly a phoenix but on the street, a bird is a bird is a bird. i noticed that after that quote, kanye paused for a bit and then performed "runaway" where it seems he was explaining that on some level he's doing some things that she really wouldn't approve of. furthermore, i think he realizes that at some degree he's just like the other people there. another thing i noticed was the ballerinas dressed in black and yet everyone at the party was dressed in white. the significance of that to me is, those at the party dressed in white (and the phoenix) are people living in the present and the ballerinas are simply a picture that kanye is painting about the women in his past (thus they are dressed in black). the interpretive dancing by the ballerinas as opposed to the traditional ballet confirmed to me that this was the case. the movements were more vibrant, sensual, and sexual at times. some of the featured dancers with solos seemed to be "on-again-off-again" girlfriends; pulling him back. the dinner guests seemed to be oblivious to the fact that kanye was taking a shot at them in the song. the turkey scene where the phoenix screamed to me was a realization that relatively being a bird was not fitting for his lifestyle. she would end up with a raw deal.

part 3:
the breakup.

my take on part 3:
life with kanye becomes seemingly unrealistic and unattractive for the phoenix. she slowly retracts from him emotionally and confirms it with what equates to the dreaded talk.

"all of the statues that we see...are phoenix turned to stone...do you know what i hate most about your world? anything that is different, you try to change. you try to tear it down. you rip the wings off the phoenix and they turn to stone. and if i don't burn, i will turn to stone." (runaway)

simply put and explained, anything that doesn't fit, he tries to make fit. the key phrase to me and theme of this whole video is "your world". the center of his world being his career, it seems that everything takes a backseat; competing for second place. thus, forcing things to fit his lifestyle without sacrifice ends up being the reason for the breakup. he tries to keep them together and she obliges him for a moment yet she eventually gains the strength to leave him. note that she has a chest plate at the end of the film (something she had not worn initially) as she tries to protect her heart from kanye.

watch the film here

overall, i loved it. it was a genius way to bring attention to his album. i can't help but notice that a few of the songs make references to hell, demons, and the devil himself but he did say that this album was meant to be dark so in that sense they seem appropriate.
the moral behind the film? simply put, you can't turn a "bird" into a housewife...i'm just saying.

suffocating like i'm sleeping undercover,
to you the solution might be simple
but i can't do it with my hands tied.
what we feel is unspeakable,
sometimes unexplained,
but whenever i'm alone,
i can feel your mind sending vibes to mine.
a thousand miles away,
yet you can feel it in the air
whenever we have a conversation;
how dare you make my world smaller?
it's like i'm almost afraid
of what it would be like to touch you;
never thought that i'd see heaven so young
but i'll surely die in your arms.
"don't ever take the present for granted"
easier said then done,
but procrastination brings me closer
to my date with death.
with that haunting thought,
i'd rather an indiscretion define my life
than to live meaninglessly and unsatisfied.
forgetting life as it is,
i strive to what it should be
changing who i am to what i could be...
hopelessly in love.

what happened to fantasia? some of you may know that fantasia was sleeping with a married man. yeah...no comment. but anyway, now the wife is reportedly considering suing fantasia "by the Alienation of Affection law, which is only recognized in North Carolina and six other states. criminals compete?

"St. Louis overtook Camden, N.J., as the nation's most dangerous city in 2009, according to a national study released Sunday.
The study by CQ Press found St. Louis had 2,070.1 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 429.4. That helped St. Louis beat out Camden, which topped last year's list and was the most dangerous city for 2003 and 2004." -Associated Press

i just thought the highlighted line indicates an organized effort by criminals in every city to make their city the most dangerous city in america. like it was a known competition or something. i'm jus sayin...

ya boy money militia

-dallas, tx

this time we have a treat from the streets. the prodigy of king of kings records: ya boy money militia. we all are familiar with the phrase "from rags to riches" but, we'll see just how one man accomplished just so with hard work and determination. let's get into it. how about we let the people know what's good? you ready?

"i was lost in the streets, it didn't amount to nothing, i'm just a traveling man, running from my past troubles...if you ask me if i'm ready, i'ma tell you let's go." - ya boy money (lyrics from "i'm ready" freestyle)

in and out of juvenile detention centers. living on the streets at age fifteen. surrounded by pimps, prostitutes, and drugs. altogether, it spells the recipe of inevitable disaster; namely prison or death. money, however, weathered the storm (so to speak) and went on to become a legit entrepreneur. at 19 he opened a nightclub. later he franchised 3 t-mobile stores and ultimately became a diamond broker. through all of these business dealings, he brushed shoulders with the likes of many and his associates eventually convinced him to tell his story via song. enough from me, let's get it from money himself.

"got a couple things that i wanna let you know, if i let you in promise you won't tell a soul..." - money militia (lyrics from "u girl")
i can't promise that. lol i got a lot of readers. shall we continue?

Dom: first of all i wanna thank you for taking time out to answer these questions. i think we all are about to receive a life lesson in the true meaning of the word hustle. i read over your brief bio and it seems you learned early to make something from nothing. what was your motivation behind your drive if you didn't have the support of others?
ybmm: i always had a belief it was easy. i didn't see others on it but i always wanted it no matter what it took. [haha] now eventually, i found out it wasn't too easy but everything i went through just moulded me, my real motivation that made me continue was to help those around me who were in worse situations.

Dom: that's what's up. there are many brothers out there that, given the same circumstances, would still be in the streets today if not dead or in jail. how did you make the transition from the streets to entrepreneurship?
ybmm: i watched all my pa'tnas die or get locked up. i knew eventually things i was doing wouldn't last after being in jail 28 times. i was then treading a thin line. the wrong move would [hinder] me and i no longer wanted that life.

Dom: a lot of people, including myself, say they use life as their fuel for their craft. is the same true for you? explain.
ybmm: aww yeah. my life and lives i've witnessed. everything i've lived through has been an educational lesson, which i can now give to others to use as they would like.

Dom: what made you want to become a lyricist and how long have you considered yourself as such?
ybmm: i don't think i've ever had a boring moment [haha]. friends and business partners always told me if i put my life on the beat, i'd be successful. guess they were right. i recorded my first song around four years ago.

Dom: nice. now how does "ya boy money militia" compare to bernard nuar? (for example an alter ego, personality, or an expressionist for bernard nuar)
ybmm: uh, i'm ME. i guess my alter ego is me going from being happy to me being mad then you'll see a switch.

Dom: i bet [haha] getting to the album "hustle and flow", from the listed tracks available, you have some hott collabos including diamond and lil keke. how did that come about?
ybmm: being at the right place at right time, i guess, and them feeling what i got. also diamond and me share the same manager so it's easy to get a hold of dorrough, diamond, or the gs boyz. we fam.

Dom: that's what's up. hard question: what is your favorite track on this album?
ybmm: what you wanna do.

Dom: wasn't so hard after all [haha]. how did you come up with the concept for "u girl"?
ybmm: i saw this bad chick at the mall and i straight up told her what i wanted to do and she fell for it.

Dom: gotta love the ladies. and the game. any past body of works like mixtapes, albums that we should know about since 2006?
ybmm: "Hustle and Flow vol.1 DJ DROP" and "Hustle and flow vol.2 Princess Kut (TX $hit)"

Dom: any shows in the near future?
ybmm: dec 2nd at texas a&m. (for tickets to that show, go to http://moneymilitia.ticketleap.com/jinglejam/)

Dom: any shoutouts/message for the people reading this blog post?
ybmm: Stay tuned, you 'bout to hear one the best tapes ever:

promize

-Greenfield, MA

the moon sets and the sun rises on the band that gives you a "reason for expectation"; promize. these alternative rockers pride themselves on their dark music as their lead singer translates what they are trying to convey with their instruments. with decades of collective musical experience, promize offers a complete sound that has been shared with the world for a while; you just might not have known it. albums, rolling stone magazine, and even movie soundtracks have all had the privilege of bearing the promize name and sound. and now, it's time to give you a quick run down of this six (sometimes seven) member band:

shelby taranto: lead vocals
dave manning: drums (leader)
rob sweeney: keys and effects
pete mcewan: bass and backing vocals
jon zera: guitars
kelly baraban: guitars and backing vocals
rich p: special guest guitarist (touring guitarist)

collective influences:
Deftones
Tool
Zed Zeppelin
Perfect circle
Filter
Chris Cornell
Jeff Buckley
Rush
Dave Matthews
Soundgarden
Smashing Pumpkins
Stone Temple Pilots
John Paul Jones
Stanley Clark
Geddy Lee
Lee Sklar
Radiohead
Alice in Chains

the band's latest album features "unholy"; a sure hit and a band favorite according to shelby. furthermore, on their climb to ultimate success, the band turned down a record deal with sony! however crazy as it might seem, promize is currently in talks with a major label. that's where jon boy zera comes in as he answers questions on behalf of the band.

Dom: what hurdles have hindered you from being where you want to be already?
Jon Boy: there are many hurdles any band must endure to survive on a daily basis. getting along with one another can be one of the biggest hurdles to overcome. in order to survive, everyone in the band has to be able to get along and work with each other. you need to have the same goals, be on the same page and you must have mutual respect for each other. with promize we all get along very well, we have respect for one another and we’re all striving towards the same goal. it’s important to assign one band member as the leader and have trust and faith in that leader to make the right moves. when you have a band and each member wants to play boss and be in charge you’re doomed.

Dom: i agree. that's very important. what are your proudest accomplishments as a group?
Jon Boy: standing outside of a venue waiting to go on stage we heard our song, "unholy" come on national radio. being featured in rolling stone magazine would be a close second.

Dom: very nice! you've done so much already. signing a major record deal: is that a peak, plateau, or new beginning?
Jon Boy: it’s the next chapter for us and what we’ve been working all our lives for.

Dom: a new chapter indeed. you've performed quite a bit. what do you think is the craziest thing to happen during/after one of your performances (including crazy fans)?
Jon Boy: where do i begin…we’ve seen fans have promize tattoos all over their body including one guy with the p, r, o, et cetera tattooed on each knuckle. we played an outdoor festival once and the stage was struck by lightning! we’ve had people streak across the stage naked, few fans fainted while signing autographs for them. one guy purposed to shelby after a show. it’s all good fun though. we love our fans.

Dom: and they love you [haha]. what advice do you have for artists that are looking to get signed?
Jon Boy: getting signed is like winning the lottery. there are plenty of amazing bands out there who have worked hard for years and will always be overlooked by labels and there are others who just got lucky. with the internet being so huge these days, in order to increase your chances and exposure it’s important to promote the hell out of yourself by using the internet. we still spend 14+ hours a day, 7 days a week self promoting anywhere and everywhere we can online. you got to work hard at it and promote, promote, promote. if getting signed were easy everybody would do it.

Dom: in other words network, network and when you're done with that network some more. jon boy, thank you for taking time to answer these questions on behalf of promize! i wish you all the best on this potential new record deal!
Jon Boy: thanks, dom.

shelby, dave, rob, pete, jon, kelly and rich...you have earned the Dom seal of approval!

nice guy vs the jerk

chivalry. courteous and generous behavior towards women. something that every woman looks for right?
so they say.

"chivalry is dead and women killed it!" - dave chappelle (killin' them softly)

even though that phrase has a comedic tone, he makes a truthful point. there is no hope for the nice guy anymore. a friend of mine is going through a rough one right now. married the love of his life. super nice guy. he's a guy around guys, and mush around his woman. he goes out the way for his woman on a daily basis and now she wants to call things off for what? boredom? nope they travel. he's cheating? nope. too soft for that. he mistreats her? nope. i said he's a nice guy! then why? she never gives the same reason twice. how about counseling? he tried. she refused. hmm...we'll come back to this story. my theory? follow me:

women love jerks...there i said it. how come it's the guys that treat women like crap the ones they never want to let go. doesn't make sense but i have somewhat of an understanding. i think on some level, we all lose an appreciation for what we have, thus the saying "you don't know what you have til it's gone". when a guy becomes a jerk, it's as if he is "taking away" the things that the woman appreciates most which makes the woman in the relationship "submit" or "cling" to the guy in fear of "losing everything". in short, women rather have a jerky boyfriend than no boyfriend.

why are women more attracted to a jerk than a sweet, nice guy?

the answer is complicated because they are and yet they aren't. there is a "nice" attribute that attracts women, but even though a jerk reveals himself as a jerk later on, women make the mistake of excusing the jerk's actions by saying "he's not always like that". then, the nice guy (who seems to do all the right things), although sincere, has absolutely no chance becoz it is now assumed that he has a hidden agenda. it's a vicious cycle.

back to the scenario with my friend:
he was pulling insight from everywhere. but when he came to me, i told him to be a straight asshole. straight up. result? he finally pushed back, stiffened his neck, and rose above her nonsense and NOW she wants to work towards making things work.
women, defend yourselves...what's up with that?!?

this is an ongoing topic that needs to be discussed. please, chime in. leave lots of comments. we are looking for everyone's point of view. even if you're a jerk. i'm just saying...

singa bromfield

at&t commercials started it but drake made it cool by putting it on a mixtape. i'm talking about putting three cities together like houstatlantavegas. musically it's common to hear a hip-hop and r&b artist, but a jazzacoustichiprock artist? what's up with that? we'll check in with a cat that goes by the name of singa bromfield for the answers. before we do that, let me tell you a little about him before he has the chance to say "google me".

don't let the pic fool you. he's just trying to get his hip-hop on. this soft spoken musician that hails from memphis (born in d.c.) has been on a mission to bring forth what he calls 'beautiful music'. in a video interview "how it all began....", bromfield explains how he first fell in love with the guitar.

"i started off playing violin, and...that really wasn't really [working well] for me. i was watching austin city limits and saw little dudes on stage playing guitar and i said 'that's going to be me'. so i got a kleenex box and some rubber bands and a [papertowel roll] and i just made me a guitar...and i just got serious with it for real..." - singa bromfield

outside of God, bromfield credits music as his life's motivator to keep going. and now, we are in the wake of hearing singa's first hip-hop mixtape entitled "no feelings". hmm...it's time for me to take this interview to the next level...

Dom: so, singa, first off the name. we know you're a singer. sometimes in the shower, i'm a singer. what made you choose the name singa?
Singa B: well my real name is nrsimha (ner-sing-ah) and everyone calls me singa for short, so i just ran with it.

Dom: easy enough. i checked out your ning page and i listened to your covers of chris breezy and nick jonas. i was jamming with you a little bit [haha]. any reason why you chose those two artists?
Singa B: it's funny because while i was attending college (art institute of nashville) people would ask me to sing a "regular" song and i only knew my originals, so i figured i'd learn a song with a cool meaning or message (who i am) and one that the ladies could vibe to (take you down).

Dom: gotta do one for the ladies. in your "how it all began..." video interview, you mentioned that music and God is the only thing that keeps you going. why is music so important to you?
Singa B: music and life goes hand and hand. of course it's a stress reliever, but also it is a talent that was purposely given to me. so i feel that i have to insinuate my philosophy on life's persona to inform people to live life "jetted".

Dom: i like that. what would you say your comfortable vocal range is?
Singa B: well naturally i'm a tenor/baritone, but i can comfortably slide into the alto area [haha].

Dom: i hear ya. i can hit mariah carey notes in the car when i'm by myself [haha]. a lot of crossover artist out there. vocally, who would you compare yourself with? we all do it so don't say you don't [haha]. i was usher when the "confessions" album came out.
Singa B: [haha]... ummm i guess i say like a john mayer crossed with like baby face and or brian mcknight type thing.

Dom: now you were on tour this past summer. how did that turn out and whom did you tour with?
Singa B: well the plan was to do a domestic tour around the states, but instead i did a few shows here then flew out to the islands and did a show with the youth choir of trelawny, jamaica. so collectively the "tour" was cancelled.

Dom: it'll come in time. being a singer, do the ladies show you mad love, wanting you to sing them something?
Singa B: [haha] well it's always good putting a smile on the ladies faces and getting the "just one more" requests. so it's cool knowing that ladies enjoy my sound.

Dom: "late night jam session" has a bounce that of "feel good" music. what that your intention? explain how you came up with that concept?
Singa B: well i wrote that song in the theme of how songs would come to me and how i am and jamming out with other musicians while people just groove to my tunes. i'm not familiar to the "feel good" music reference, but it was intended to make you dance, snap, or how every you jam. so feeling good sounds like it will fit.

Dom: exactly. now the mixtape. what can we expect?
Singa B: well currently i'm working on a new album entitled "on the road" which is scheduled to release in the spring of 2011. so i felt that i shouldn't limit myself from expressing my thoughts, whether it's spoken word, singing, et cetera. so using rap, singing and my guitar, i wanted to let my fans and listeners understand my stories of journeys through life.

Dom: what's next for singa bromfield and what do we need to know about you?
Singa B: after the release of NO FEELINS, i'll continue to do more collaborative projects and shows throughout the country. dates of shows will be posted by new years, so hopefully people will like what i bring to the table and that will take off.

Dom: leave us with a few words for the people out there.
Singa B: never doubt yourself! if you feel like you want to be someone of something that defines your spirit, expressing yourself or 'making your mark', GO FOR IT!

singa on ning
singa on reverbnation
follow singa on twitter

that's right. go for it! and i'm sure we haven't heard the last of singa so ya'll stay tuned for more from this jazzacoustichiprock artist. by the way singa, don't let nobody take my phrase. i'm the first to call you that! i'm just saying..."NO FEELINS" mixtape dropping today at 10 a.m. eastern time! cop that today in support of singa! singa bromfield, you know the drill. take a bow, you have earned the Dom seal of approval.
